#### Ground Snow Load

Laurent explained that the ground snow load is a critical parameter in determining the snow loads on a structure. He mentioned that the ground snow load is typically measured at weather stations across the country and correlated with snow depth measurements. Laurent also mentioned that some areas may require site-specific studies to determine the ground snow load.

#### Surface Roughness and Roof Exposure

Laurent discussed the significance of surface roughness and roof exposure in determining snow loads. He explained that surface roughness refers to the roughness of the land around the building, while roof exposure considers the presence of obstructions that can affect the amount of snow on the roof. Laurent mentioned that these factors are important considerations in snow load calculations.

#### Thermal Condition of the Building

Laurent highlighted the impact of the thermal condition of the building on snow loads. He explained that the temperature inside the building can affect the melting of snow on the roof. Laurent mentioned that buildings with warm roofs or poorly insulated ceilings may experience slower snow melting, leading to higher snow loads.

#### Unbalanced Snow Load

Laurent discussed the concept of unbalanced snow load, which occurs when snow accumulates unevenly on a roof. He explained that wind and sun exposure can cause unbalanced snow loads. Laurent mentioned that for rafter systems with spans less than 20 feet, the unbalanced snow load is typically applied to one side of the roof.


#### ASC 7-22 Changes

Laurent briefly mentioned the upcoming changes in ASC 7-22, the latest version of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7 standard. He explained that the new version includes a revised ground snow load map and adjustments to snow drift loads based on winter winds. Laurent highlighted that the adoption of ASC 7-22 by local jurisdictions may result in changes to snow load requirements.

He entered the location, Mammoth Lakes, California, and selected the appropriate parameters such as ground snow load, surface roughness, roof exposure, thermal condition, and roof properties. Laurent used the ClearCalcs wood beam calculator to design the rafter for the calculated snow load. He selected the appropriate rafter size and adjusted the load values to match the calculated snow load. Laurent demonstrated how the calculator determines whether the rafter passes or fails based on bending, shear, bearing, and deflection criteria.

The webinar covers the basics of base plate design, including what a base plate is, why it is important, and the forces and failure modes associated with base plates. It also includes a work example using ClearCalcs software.

Base plates are important in steel concrete interfaces because they help with leveling concrete and provide a set amount of tolerance between the foundation and column. The forces acting on base plates include plate bending and anchor forces, which can cause plate yielding or anchor failure. To prevent these failures, the plate should have adequate thickness and the anchors can be hooked or an anchor plate can be added.

The ClearCalcs steel base plate calculator dynamically calculates parameters based on the inputted force, and allows for checking anchor cancel capacity, pullout capacity, and shear capacity. It also checks for concrete breakout, side blowout, pry out, and sheer breakout, providing a comprehensive analysis of base plate design.

In the current segment, Eva continues with the design example and updates the dimensions of the base plate to accommodate the given column size and forces. She then calculates the required plate length and width based on the compressive strength and factored load. Eva also mentions that ClearCalcs can factor in unfactored forces for designing purposes.

She increases the plate thickness and length iteratively until all failure modes are accounted for. She also explains that the grout beneath the plate is considered in the calculations and that they are open to building features around stainless steel bolts if users require them. Additionally, Nathan asks about prying forces on the base plate, to which Eva responds that they track for overturning and adequate anchors but hadn't considered prying of the plate itself yet.

Using the correct wind classification is critical in ensuring a building is designed to comply with the applicable local building standards. In Australia, the two standards that apply are the AS 4055: 2021: Residential Wind Actions and the AS/NZS 1170.2:2021: Structural design actions, Part 2: Wind actions. 

However, calculating wind loads for a residential building can be difficult and time-consuming. The parameters that go into wind calculations such as topographic parameters, shielding parameters, and terrain categories are often obtained based on guesstimates and may result in potentially unsafe or costly outcomes during or after the build.

After determining the wind classification and calculating the horizontal racking force, the next step is to determine the wind pressures using table lookups in the standard. The wind pressures depend on the surface type of the roof, whether it's vertical or sloped. Once the wind pressures are determined, the total racking force can be calculated by multiplying them. The code also mentions the use of nominal wall bracings, which are internal linings of the building that can already take some of the racking force.

The presenter continues to explain the wind bracing requirements for residential houses, discussing the capacity and specifications for cross bracing and sheet bracing. They also mention the height modification and the option to increase capacity if using a different framing group. Additionally, they highlight the importance of evenly distributing the bracings and provide spacing requirements based on wind classes.

The presenter continues by discussing the spacing requirements for wind bracing, depending on the wind class and whether it is for a single or upper floor of a two-story building. They also mention the need to consider selling depths and provide proper connections for the bracing. The presenter concludes by introducing ClearCalcs' wind bracing calculator and encourages users to provide feedback for future improvements.

The webinar titled "Shuriken Connectors by Atlas Tube and Their Applications in Structural Design" is hosted by ClearCalcs Director of Customer Success, Connor Conzelman, and presented by Ted Goldstein, PE., Business Development Engineer, Atlas Tube and inventor of Shuriken Connectors. ClearCalcs is a cloud-based structural calculations software that combines powerful FEA analysis with user-friendly tools for steel, wood, timber, concrete, and cold-formed steel. The webinar aims to discuss the applications of Shuriken connectors in structural design.

The Shuriken connector is not a fastener, but rather a disposable wrench that holds a nut on the inside or inaccessible side of a connection and allows for standard bolts to be installed from one side. The system aims to avoid field welding, which can be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and introduce uncertainty when it comes to scheduling an inspection.

The reason for the invention of Shuriken Connectors is to take advantage of the benefits of HSS columns, such as better efficiency and compression, improved aesthetics, and simpler connections. The tool allows for the use of HSS in more than two or three stories without having to weld splices, which has been a significant impediment to the adoption of HSS.

Ted Goldstein discusses various applications of Shuriken connectors, including beam connections, moment connections, and structured connections. The connectors can be mounted in the shop and easily bolted in the field, avoiding the need for time-consuming and labor-intensive field welding. Goldstein also notes that Shuriken connectors can be purchased directly from Atlas Tube or through a distributor.

The current segment focuses on a basic Shuriken connection example using an HSS tube with splice plates and slip-critical bolts. The bolts have a capacity of 8.81 kips per bolt, and the connection passes all limit state checks for gross section yielding, tension rupture, net section rupture, and block shear.

The webinar then delves into the calculations involved in designing a Shuriken connector connection, including gross section yielding, net section rupture, and block shear. The effective area of the material is calculated by subtracting the number of holes times the area of a single hole, with a factor of 0.93 to account for the possibility of thinner walls. The splice plate capacity is also checked against gross section yielding and net section rupture.

Ted Goldstein explains the failure modes that typically control for HSS connections, including block shear and rupture. He also notes that the splice plates were sufficient by a wide margin, with everything being over two hundred kips. Interested parties can visit the Atlas Tube website to download the datasheet and request a sample.

Ted Goldstein answers questions from the audience during the webinar, including the minimum HSS size required for welding the shuriken and whether the connectors can be used in wet or corrosive atmospheres. He also discusses the possibility of using shuriken connectors in composite sections with filled concrete, stating that there should be no reason why it would affect the capacity of the arrangement.

During the Q&A session, a participant asked if Shuriken connectors meet the standards of the maritime industry, to which Ted Goldstein responded that they have not had an application in shipping yet but are willing to work with interested parties to understand the requirements and certifications needed. Additionally, ClearCalcs has recently added new features such as diaphragm analysis, custom wood sections, and an open web steel joist calculator, and they are looking for feedback from light commercial design teams to shape future priorities.

This is a transcript from a webinar on Wind Load Calculations to American Standards held on May 24th, 2023. The webinar was hosted by Connor Conzelman, ClearCalcs Director of Customer Success and presented by Laurent Gérin, P.Eng., North America Engineering Team Lead. 

They began the webinar by discussing with the attendees the most annoying parts of calculating wind loads and introduced ClearCalcs, a cloud-based structural engineering platform.

Laurent Gérin discusses the basics of wind loads, including lateral loads and roof uplift, and emphasizes the importance of using the correct wind speed when designing for wind. He also mentions that ASCE 7 is the standard used in most states for wind load calculations.

Gérin explains the three categories of exposure in ASCE 7, which are based on the level of wind obstruction, and emphasizes the importance of considering topography and elevation when calculating wind loads. He also discusses the four categories of building enclosure, which take into account the presence and strength of openings in the building.

Gérin explains that wind loads on buildings can be divided into two categories: components and cladding, and main wind force resisting systems. He notes that for small residential buildings like houses, ASCE 7 provides a convenient way to calculate wind loads based on different zones and coefficients. Gérin also emphasizes the impact of building enclosure on wind loads and how it affects the pressure on the inside of a building.

In this segment, Gérin explains the two types of wind loads: components and cladding, and main wind force resisting systems. He also discusses the two methods to calculate the MWFRS loads in ASCE 7 and emphasizes the importance of using the correct load factor when designing for wind. Finally, he introduces a design example in ClearCalcs for a stud wall spanning two floors in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Gérin creates a new wind load calculation in ClearCalcs for a gable roof in Lincoln, Nebraska, using the correct wind speed and exposure category. He emphasizes the importance of considering building properties such as enclosure type and roof pitch when calculating wind loads.

Gérin explains how wind pressures vary based on tributary area and provides a table that shows the different wind pressures for positive and negative wind forces in different zones. He then demonstrates how to use this information to calculate wind loads on a stud wall using ClearCalcs.

Gérin demonstrates how to enter distributed gravity loads and wind loads into ClearCalcs, emphasizing the importance of being conservative with load eccentricity assumptions. He also discusses the use of project defaults and invites feedback on how users are utilizing them. Finally, he shows how to determine which member size is appropriate based on governing factors such as deflection.

Gérin then proceeds to demonstrate how to design an exterior stud wall to resist components and cladding loads using ClearCalcs. He explains the process of calculating effective wall member area based on the span of the tall wall studs and their spacing, and entering roof geometry and ground elevation factor. Gérin also addresses a question about parapet components and cladding in ClearCalcs, which is currently not supported but will be added in the future.

Gérin explains how to convert wind loads in PSF to loads on shear walls and introduces a future feature of ClearCalcs that will automate this process. He invites feedback from the audience on this feature and concludes by emphasizing the importance of considering topography and building enclosure when calculating wind loads.

Gérin discusses new features in ClearCalcs, including the ability to enter custom wood properties and the recent addition of wood and steel truss design. He also mentions upcoming webinars on the Sheriken connection system, steel base plate design, and starting your own engineering practice with mass timber design expert David Ortekin. Gérin invites feedback from users on how ClearCalcs can improve wind load calculations and address missing elements like overhang loads and parapets.

The Clearcalcs expert hour webinar features David Hourdequin discussing his past projects and the cloud-based structural calculations software, Clearcalcs. Laurent introduces David and his new book, Consulting Engineering Success, before David talks about the wooden barn project in central Florida, which utilized metal plate connected joints and a k truss to resist wind shear.

Chris, the draftsman for the wooden barn project, joins the webinar and discusses the challenges of modifying the original design to create scissor trusses that were both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound. He also mentions the owner's input and how David's meticulousness made the process easier.

David Hourdequin discusses the Harry Potter ride project at Universal Studios, which required a 70-foot-long truss and an erection platform due to a hole in the floor. The project also involved creating a kingpin that was 26 feet high and 3 feet in diameter, with diaphragm pieces made of double laminated advantech and g flex epoxy used for assembly. The sheer walls were made of wood frame and two by eight walls to withstand wind shear.

David Hourdequin discusses the inner shell of the 26-foot-high and 3-feet-in-diameter kingpin used in the Harry Potter ride project at Universal Studios, which was made of double laminated advantech and g flex epoxy. He also talks about the importance of diaphragm pieces in the assembly and the use of tension rods and plate washers in the cantilevered trusses. Ron asks a question about how the staves and the barn were connected to each other, and David explains that they were glued together using g flex epoxy under highly controlled conditions.

Dan Kaiser, who worked on the Harry Potter ride project at Universal Studios with Hourdequin and Ben Krompak, shares a video of the ride and discusses the challenges of building an authentic timber frame structure that is constantly wet and dry. They also discuss the maintenance required for the structure due to its exposure to the elements.

During the Clearcalcs expert hour webinar, David Hourdequin discusses the wooden barn project in central Florida and mentions that the heavy timber used in the project is the best material for fire resistance. He also addresses a question about whether the timbers were pressure treated and explains that they were not, but it would have been a good idea considering the humid climate in Florida.

David Hourdequin discusses several other timber frame projects, including a pavilion in Virginia, a residence in Maryland, and a modified double Pratt truss in Virginia. He also thanks Chris, Ben, and Dan for joining the discussion and adding another dimension to the conversation. David encourages attendees to read his book, Consulting Engineering Success, and announces that he will be recording the audiobook version soon.

The webinar is about structural design basics, specifically signing columns in the real world. ClearCalcs is a cloud-based platform for structural engineering calculations. The presenter, Connor, discusses load linking and validation to eliminate wasted time. Examples are given for gravity loads, wind loads, and seismic loads.

In this segment, Connor sets up a new calculation in ClearCalcs for an exposed outdoor isolated wood column and inputs the given information such as column height, support conditions, axial eccentricity, and load magnitudes for dead, live, and snow loads. He also shows how to add intermediate bracing if needed and selects a member that's comfortable for the design.

Connor then moves on to example 2, where he sets up a new calculation in ClearCalcs for lateral loads caused by wind. He inputs the wind speed and exposure category, and uses the components and cladding wind load calculator to determine the lateral loads on the column. He then inputs these loads into the deck post design and applies them as distributive loads.

Connor confirms with the engineers whether the ClearCalcs outputs are ultimate or service loads. He then demonstrates how to modify bracing and support inputs in the calculator, and shows how to determine the governing load combination for each check by switching to detailed mode. Finally, he introduces example 3, where he sets up a new calculation for a freestanding seismic-resisting frame and explains how to find seismic data using the hazards by location tool.

Connor demonstrates how to use the ATC Hazards tool to gather wind, snow, tornado, and seismic data at a specific location. He then sets up a new calculation in ClearCalcs for seismic analysis and inputs the short and long period spectral acceleration, transition period, building risk category, height, and effective seismic weight. Connor also shows how to link the seismic base shear to the frame calculation and design a wood member to resist the seismic loads.

Connor demonstrates how to modify the member selector in ClearCalcs to choose a different species or number of plies for built-up posts. He also mentions that ClearCalcs is working on developing an API and encourages users to reach out to the Help team with any questions or suggestions. Finally, he reminds viewers to use the Help button for assistance and announces an upcoming webinar on heavy timber framing.

The webinar titled "National Construction Code (NCC) 2022: What's New for Residential Structural Design" presented by Brooks Smith, Head of Engineering R&D at ClearCalcs, discussed the changes in the NCC 2022 that affect structural engineers, particularly those related to residential engineering. 

The webinar also provided information on ClearCalcs, a cloud-based platform for designing concrete, steel, cold-formed steel, and timber structures. 

The NCC 2022 introduces updates in energy efficiency requirements, wind loads, and other design provisions. ClearCalcs offers calculators compliant with the NCC 2022 and provides access to the updated standards.

#### Energy Efficiency Requirements:

The NCC 2022 introduces new energy efficiency requirements aimed at reducing household energy bills and addressing climate change concerns. The minimum thermal efficiency star rating increases from 6 to 7, requiring more insulation and control over glazing. A new whole-home energy use rating is introduced, with detached houses needing a rating of at least 60 and apartments needing a rating of at least 50. The NCC also includes condensation requirements and provisions for livable housing design.

#### Wind Loads:

The NCC 2022 updates wind regions, internal wind pressures, and other factors related to wind loads. The wind region map is revised, with new regions and changes to existing regions. Cyclonic regions no longer have special factors for wind speeds, but instead allow linear interpolation based on distance to the coastline. Terrain categories are simplified, and there are adjustments to shielding and hill multipliers. Internal wind pressures now consider large openings in buildings.

#### Steel Design:

AS 4100:1998, the steel design standard, is updated to the 2022 revision. The major change is the addition of a new bolt grade, Grade 10.9, aligning with the AS 1252.1 bolt standard. There are also changes to bolt capacity calculations and formulas for shear strength. Additionally, a major error in the mechanical properties of steel at elevated temperatures is corrected. ClearCalcs provides calculators compliant with the updated steel design standard.

### Webinar Summary 

The webinar titled Live Residential Design: Taos, NM Custom Home Pt. 1 was presented by ClearCalcs' Director of Customer Success, Connor Conzelman. The focus was on designing beams in the real world using ClearCalcs' cloud-based structural calculation software. Examples included wood beam presets and load linking features.

In this segment, Connor discusses the required inputs for designing a deck joist in ClearCalcs, including assumptions for joist length and bearing lengths. He also shows how to determine the actual connection to the top beam using structural drawings and details.

Connor explains how to determine the width of a rim joist and subtract it from the dimensions of the deck beam to find the actual bearing length. He also demonstrates how to use ClearCalcs' Wood Connections calculator to determine the hanger's width for the bottom connection of the joist.

Connor then proceeds to add a new calculation in ClearCalcs for the wood beam of the deck joist, using the Deck Joist preset and inputting the correct loads and member dimensions. He also demonstrates how to swap between different lumber grades and sizes in the software. In the next segment, he will discuss the design of the deck beam at the top of the deck system.

Connor proceeds to design a steel girder in ClearCalcs, which requires inputs such as the length of the beam and the supports. He explains that unlike the Wood Beam calculator, the Steel calculator does not require bearing lengths. Connor also mentions that he will create help content on including wind loads in the calculations.

Connor discusses how to determine the tributary width of a steel girder and input it into ClearCalcs for designing the beam. He also explains how to select the appropriate cross-section for the beam based on the loads and member dimensions, and demonstrates how to filter the available options in the software. Additionally, he mentions that ClearCalcs is now up-to-date with IBC 2021, ACI 318-19, and Florida Building Code 2020.

Connor discusses the Design Code for Load Combinations in ClearCalcs, which includes options such as IBC 2021, IRC, California Building Code, and Florida Building Code. He also answers questions from attendees regarding upcoming webinars, support for Canada's connection details, and concentrated lateral loads from shear wall hold-downs.

Connor offers to run training sessions and answer any questions about ClearCalcs, including the use of Autosize. He also addresses user questions about adjusting the duration factor and setting species defaults in the member selector.
